Lithuania’s ruling coalition partner to discuss election prep and government performance
The governing coalition’s Nemuno aušra party will hold a board meeting on Saturday in the Prienai district to assess preparations for next year’s municipal elections and review the coalition’s work, LRT reports.
Party leader Remigijus Žemaitaitis said key topics will include election strategy, campaign headquarters, and evaluations of the Agriculture and Environment Ministries’ performance, as well as the broader work of the ruling majority.
“We’ll discuss coordination, the election campaign team, and review what the government has achieved—where there are shortcomings and what needs improvement,” Žemaitaitis told journalists earlier this week. He added that no major decisions are expected.
The meeting follows a recent session by the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP), which debated whether to continue cooperation with Nemuno aušra after most of its lawmakers opposed plans to establish a military training ground in the Lazdijai district. The Social Democrats postponed a final decision until May or June, when a new party leadership takes office.
LSDP leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius criticised the current coalition, arguing it harms both his party and the state. He singled out Žemaitaitis for refusing to support the military project, stating that the Nemuno aušra leader prioritises air defence investment over the training facility.
The ruling coalition holds 81 seats in the 141-member parliament, with Nemuno aušra contributing 18 lawmakers. Municipal elections are scheduled for spring 2027.
