Lithuanian lawmakers say prime minister failed to present alternative defence plans

Members of Lithuania’s parliamentary National Security and Defence Committee (NSGK) stated on Tuesday that Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė did not present her previously mentioned alternative defence plans during a closed-door session, LRT reports.

Laurynas Kasčiūnas, the committee’s deputy chairman and a conservative lawmaker, told journalists after the meeting that Ruginienė had only outlined standard NATO defence procedures. “We asked the prime minister—who herself publicly stated that we have Plan B, Plan C—to discuss these, but today there was no mention of them. Instead, we received a presentation on how things would proceed within NATO’s existing planning framework,” he said.

Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, leader of the opposition Liberal Movement, criticised Ruginienė’s lack of engagement, stating that the prime minister “was among those who spoke the least.” Čmilytė-Nielsen claimed the committee’s questions went unanswered, adding: “Either the prime minister misunderstood our intent, or she chose not to address the B, C, and D scenarios she had previously raised in public.”

The lawmakers had requested details on Lithuania’s contingency plans in the event of reduced or absent US support—a topic Ruginienė had referenced in earlier public statements.
