Lithuania launches fifth annual Democracy Knowledge Contest
The fifth annual Democracy Knowledge Contest has begun in Lithuania, inviting students and adults to test their civic literacy, BNS reports.
Organisers aim to encourage broader public engagement with national and global political processes, covering topics such as legislative institutions, democratic principles, human rights, and the history of parliamentarism.
“This contest is not just about testing knowledge—it’s an invitation to engage more consciously in public life,” said Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas, the event’s patron. “Understanding democracy empowers citizens to contribute meaningfully to their country’s development. Civic literacy and critical thinking are more vital than ever today.”
In the two months leading up to the contest, organisers conducted civic education sessions in 133 schools across Lithuania, prioritising smaller institutions in rural areas and towns that had not previously participated. “These events strengthen civic awareness and promote active participation in democratic processes,” said Seimas Chancellor Algirdas Stončaitis. “It’s crucial that young people develop an understanding of governance and their role as citizens—every Lithuanian’s voice matters, regardless of where they live.”
Students in grades 9–12 and adults are eligible to take part. The first round runs April 15–16, with the top 60 students advancing to the final on May 9 at the Seimas. Finalists will receive parliamentary awards, and top scorers may win trips to the European Parliament and the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.
