Police in Kaunas have detained a 47-year-old man suspected of shooting at birds along the Nemunas riverbank in the Šančiai district, LRT.lt reports. Officers later discovered what are believed to be narcotics during a search of his home.

According to Kristina Miškauskaitė, an advisor at the Kaunas County Chief Police Commissariat, authorities received reports on Tuesday of a man firing at flying birds near the river. When officers arrived, the suspect threw part of a shotgun and ammunition into the river upon seeing them.

Fire and rescue personnel retrieved the discarded weapon parts and ammunition from the water. Officers found additional firearm components and rounds in the man’s possession, as well as suspected narcotics during the subsequent home search.

The detainee is known to police, having faced administrative penalties and prior convictions. He was recently released from a correctional facility.
