Lithuania’s prime minister has called for public vigilance after a suspected drone crashed into a lake in Varėna district on Sunday night.

Inga Ruginienė, speaking after an emergency meeting of the National Security Commission, thanked the public for reporting the incident and urged citizens to contact emergency services if they observe suspicious objects or movements.

Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said preliminary evidence suggested the drone was Ukrainian and may have strayed off course due to electronic warfare interference. He added that the drone was likely intended to target the Primorsk oil storage facility in Russia’s northwest, where a major attack occurred overnight.

“Such incidents are not isolated,” Kaunas said. “Neighbouring states face similar challenges. The only way to prevent them is to increase pressure to end the war in Ukraine. Vladimir Putin can stop this war today if he chooses to.”

The prime minister compared Lithuania’s defence procurement process to buying everyday goods, noting that unlike milk or bread, military equipment cannot be purchased off the shelf.

“I wish there were a shopping centre for defence, where you could just go in, pick what you need and buy it on the spot,” Ruginienė said. “Unfortunately, that’s not how the world works. Countries receive quotas for certain acquisitions and cannot buy as much as they order.”

She added that while Lithuania has secured record defence spending, global industrial capacity is now the limiting factor.

The first radar systems ordered for drone detection are expected to arrive this year, with full operational capability for detecting and neutralising unmanned aerial vehicles not expected until 2030. Integration and training will further delay deployment.

Residents near Lake Lavyso reported hearing a loud buzzing sound around 3 a.m. on Monday, followed by an explosion. Emergency services were alerted midday Monday after a hole and metal debris were spotted in the lake. The military received a report shortly after.
