Incident in Varėna district: unexploded object reported after overnight explosion

An unexploded object fell near the village of Lavysas in Varėna district, Lithuania, following an overnight explosion, authorities confirmed on Monday.
Video footage shared with LRT shows a flying object accompanied by a sound, followed by a bright flash and falling debris after an explosion. The object is not visible on the night-time camera footage.
According to surveillance camera data, the incident occurred at 03:04 on Monday morning. LRT sources reported that police officers, representatives of the Fire and Rescue Department (PAGD), and a military helicopter were present at the possible crash site by Monday afternoon. A witness told LRT that debris possibly belonging to the object was visible on the ice of a nearby lake.
The National Crisis Management Centre (NKVC) confirmed it was aware of reports regarding a possible object falling in Varėna and stated that services and the military were investigating the situation. Further details are expected to be provided shortly.
