A failed attempt to break into an Artea bank branch in a Vilnius shopping centre left no client data or assets compromised, the bank confirmed in a statement on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on March 18 at the bank’s branch on Žemynos Street, where an intruder attempted to force entry through an external wall but failed to penetrate the premises. No documents, cash, or safes were accessed, and staff followed security protocols, forcing the assailant to retreat, according to Saulius Jarmalis, the bank’s communications director.

One employee suffered exposure to tear gas during the attempt and required medical attention. Their condition is reported as improving, with the bank providing ongoing support, including psychological assistance.

Jarmalis stated that evidence suggests the attack was premeditated, with the perpetrator targeting a reinforced wall bordering an unused adjacent space. Security services, police, and medical teams responded swiftly, while bank management assessed the branch’s safety and reviewed procedures in light of the incident.

Artea has pledged to update security measures across all customer service branches. Authorities continue to investigate, though the intruder’s identity remains unknown.
