A man deployed tear gas and stole documents from an Artea bank branch in Vilnius on Tuesday evening, injuring an employee before fleeing, Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT) reports. Police have launched a manhunt, sealing off surrounding streets in the Pašilaičiai district as they search for the suspect.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. local time at the bank’s branch on Žemynos Street. According to police spokesperson Ramūnas Matonis, the assailant entered the branch, released the gas, and took a secure container holding documents. “A large police operation is underway,” Matonis told LRT Radio, adding that officers were working from witness descriptions to locate the suspect.
Julija Samorokovskaja, head of the Vilnius County Police Communications Division, confirmed to LRT.lt that a pre-trial investigation had been opened. Emergency responders, including fire and rescue teams, were also dispatched to the scene. The injured bank employee received medical attention, while bank security specialists arrived to assist authorities.
Artea bank communications director Saulius Jarmalis stated that customer funds and data remained secure. “We have safety protocols for such situations,” he said. The affected branch will remain closed in the coming days, with heightened security measures introduced at other locations.
As of late Tuesday, the suspect remained at large. Police have not disclosed further details about the stolen documents or a possible motive.
