President Gitanas Nausėda has declined to describe possible provocations on Lithuania’s border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region, saying that revealing intelligence could help hostile services. LRT reported his comments in an interview with BNS.
“I do not want to specify these threats because that could harm our national interests,” Nausėda said. “We often make life easier for the enemy’s intelligence services by talking too much.”
He said troops had been sent to respond to threats near the border, and authorities were considering how to strengthen protection at the most vulnerable sections.
Poland has responded more forcefully to threats along its border with Russia, saying this week that it had prevented a possible provocation. Nausėda said Poland was acting appropriately by keeping the public alert, but added that Warsaw’s sharper response could also be linked to domestic politics, including upcoming elections. He said it was not his role to judge politicians in neighbouring countries.
Nausėda said Russia was seeking varied ways to destabilise the Baltic states and other countries, but that this did not fundamentally change the overall threat picture. He described the regional security situation as difficult. Lithuanian and Western intelligence services link Russian subversive activity and sabotage operations to efforts to weaken allies’ motivation to support Ukraine, he said. Russia also aims to test NATO’s patience and decision-making mechanisms to assess the alliance’s vulnerabilities.
Several flights in Europe were disrupted this week after reports of explosives on aircraft. Fighter jets escorted some planes, and at least two flights were diverted. The European Union said it was not yet clear whether the reports were connected and that it was monitoring events with national authorities. Nausėda said he had “some information” about the incidents but could not confirm Russia was responsible.
