Artists Mihkel Ilus and Holger Loodus have opened a joint exhibition, “The Bronstein Principle”, at the Artovert gallery in Tallinn, ERR reported.

The artists draw on a theory attributed to Arkadi Bronstein, a neurobiologist of Latvian-American origin. It holds that art can clear excess information from the human brain, allowing people to see life with a fresh perspective.

Ilus said Bronstein viewed an artist’s body of work as one large picture, of which the artist might not be aware. An artist may create fragments of that whole throughout their life, he said, sometimes perceiving the bigger picture and sometimes forgetting it.

Ilus said he had continued working on sketches made 10 to 15 years ago, seeking new forms for them. Loodus, meanwhile, explored how thousands of people encounter art through reproductions rather than by visiting exhibitions. He said he tried to remove or blur information in line with the principle, arguing that less information can bring viewers closer to the essence of art.

The exhibition is open until December 12.
