Early voting ends Thursday in the snap election for a Lithuanian parliament seat in the single-member Nalšia North constituency, LRT reports. Only voters who have declared their place of residence within the constituency are eligible to vote.

The constituency covers Ignalina district municipality, Visaginas and three polling districts in Zarasai district municipality: Salakas, Smalvos and Turmantas.

Early voting began on Tuesday at the municipal buildings in Ignalina, Visaginas and Zarasai. From Wednesday to Friday, voting is also being organised at healthcare and social care institutions, including Visaginas Hospital, Visaginas Social Services Centre, Visaginas Social Care Home, Ignalina District Health Centre, Salakas Social Care Home and the Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis Parish Care Home in Mielagėnai. Voting at these institutions is available only at agreed times and only to voters staying there on those days.

Election commission members will organise voting at voters’ homes on November 6 and 7. This option is available to people with disabilities, those caring for them at home, people temporarily unable to work because of illness, and voters aged 70 or older. Election day is November 8.

Eleven candidates are contesting the seat. The Nemunas Dawn party nominated Ignas Adomavičius; the Centre-Right Union nominated Giedrius Dainys; the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union nominated Gintautas Kindurys; and the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party nominated Vladislavas Kondratovičius. The Lithuanian Regions Party is represented by Nikolajus Lebedevičius, the Freedom Party by Maksimas Paukštė, and the Liberal Movement by Mėta Paulauskė.

The Union of Democrats “For Lithuania” nominated Antanas Šakalys; the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats nominated Andrejus Šildiajevas; and the Union of the Nation and Justice nominated Dalia Štraupaitė. Viktoras Voroninas is running for the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania-Christian Families Alliance.

The by-election was called after liberal Jevgenijus Šuklinas, who had been elected in the constituency, died in May.
