Estonia’s Reform Party tried to persuade Hanno Pevkur to stand in the next parliamentary elections, but he declined despite being offered a leading position on the party’s list, secretary general Kristo Enn Vaga told ERR.
Pevkur recently announced on social media that he was leaving national politics and would not run for parliament. Vaga said the party had discussed offering him the top spot in a constituency but did not identify which one.
Vaga said Pevkur’s decision was personal and was not influenced by the position offered. After 25 years in national politics, Pevkur wanted a change, Vaga said, calling his departure a significant loss for Estonia.
The Reform Party is putting together a list of 125 candidates across Estonia and will review its plans following Pevkur’s decision, Vaga said.
Asked about the departures of Pevkur, Liina Kersna and Maris Lauri, Vaga said he expected the party to field strong lists in all 12 constituencies. Kersna plans to take a break from politics to focus on education, while Lauri has taken a position at the president’s office, he said.
Vaga also said the party was preparing a programme focused on supporting people through difficult times, growing the economy and keeping Estonia independent and free.
