Prosecutors close Marijampolė assault probe because suspects are too young

LRT reports that prosecutors have ended a pre-trial investigation into an assault on a teenage girl in Marijampolė after finding that the two suspected offenders were below the age of criminal responsibility.

The incident took place on July 15 in Poetry Park, a park in Marijampolė. Investigators found that the girl was struck dozens of times and taken to a medical facility afterwards. Evidence gathered in the case indicates that a girl and a boy were involved, with the boy allegedly inciting the conflict. Both were under 16 at the time.

The investigation began on July 16. Investigators inspected the scene, reviewed video footage and other evidence, and questioned more than 30 witnesses. The video of the assault spread on social media that evening.

The decision and case materials will be sent to the Marijampolė mayor to consider assigning minimum or medium supervision measures to the minors. Police will also decide whether to begin administrative proceedings against their parents. The decision to end the investigation can be appealed to a senior prosecutor.
