A total of 259 voters cast ballots on the first day of early voting in the by-election for Lithuania’s Seimas in the Nalšia North single-member constituency, LRT reported, citing the Central Electoral Commission. That represents 0.9% of the constituency’s 28,440 eligible voters.

Visaginas recorded nearly 150 voters, while more than 100 had voted in Ignalina District Municipality. In Zarasai District Municipality, five people voted. Only voters from the Salakas, Smalvos and Turmantas polling districts there are eligible to vote in the by-election, and they are expected to find it closer and more convenient to cast their ballots on Sunday.

The most active voters were registered in the Ignalina, Ignalina Centre, Banga and Auksinis Raktelis polling districts, according to the commission.

Early voting will continue for two more days, until 8 p.m. on November 5. Voters can cast ballots from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Sunday, November 8, voting will take place at the constituency’s 27 polling districts, also from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The candidates include Ignotas Adomavičius, nominated by Nemuno Aušra; Giedrius Dainys of the Centre-Right Union; Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union member Gintautas Kindurys; Social Democrat Vladislavas Kondratovičius; Nikolajus Lebedevičius of the Lithuanian Regions Party; Freedom Party politician Maksimas Paukštė; and Mėta Paulauskė, representing the Liberal Movement.

Other candidates are Antanas Šakalis, nominated by the Union of Democrats “For Lithuania”; Andrejus Šildiajevas, nominated by the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats; Viktoras Voroninas, nominated by the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania-Christian Families Alliance; and Dalia Štraupaitė, nominated by the Union of the People and Justice.

The by-election was called after liberal MP Jevgenijus Šuklinas, elected in 2024, died in late May. The Central Electoral Commission revoked his parliamentary mandate in early June. The Electoral Code requires a by-election to be held within six months when the powers of a member elected in a single-member constituency end, unless less than a year remains before the next regular parliamentary election.
