Reinvere premieres trio work defending musical tradition

Beethoven, classical music, Jüri Reinvere

Composer Jüri Reinvere will premiere a new work inspired by Beethoven at Vanemuine Concert Hall on Tuesday, ERR reports. The piece links older and contemporary composition.

Written for a traditional piano trio of piano, violin and cello, the short work will be performed by Trio’95. Reinvere said Beethoven’s skill with musical forms and short works had occupied his thoughts while he was composing.

“In Germany, it is very much in fashion to lynch Beethoven, and entire festivals are organised to mock him. They play music and say it is outdated. We are something better now, and I do not think so,” Reinvere said.

He said the work speaks more about an earlier period but also takes a position on the present. “Destroying traditional old culture is in no way justified or right,” he said.

The concert will also feature works by Brahms, Takemitsu and Schumann. Reinvere’s new piece will also be presented in Tallinn and Jõhvi.
