Riga has completed an 863-metre road overpass linking Tvaika Street in Sarkandaugava with Kundziņsala’s public and industrial areas, LSM reported. The route will open to traffic on November 1, later than originally planned.

The overpass is intended to divert freight traffic farther from the city centre and residential neighbourhoods, while improving access to the port. Riga Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs called it one of the largest infrastructure projects carried out in the city in recent years.

The project cost more than 82 million euros and was carried out jointly by Riga City Council and the Freeport of Riga Authority. Funding included a 23-million-euro state budget grant, a 59.6-million-euro state budget loan and 4.5 million euros from the European Union’s Cohesion Fund.

The new route includes an illuminated pedestrian and cycle path, road markings for runners and three lifts: one on the Tvaika Street side and two on Kundziņsala. It also provides a separate turn-off to the island’s residential neighbourhood.

The link is also expected to improve the movement of military equipment and cargo between Riga port terminals and the national road network, supporting military logistics for Latvia and its allies.

Construction was carried out by the RK Link consortium, formed by Hanza Construction Group, Binders and Tilts. Vektors T designed the project, and Firma L4 supervised construction.
