Baltic Sea, Liepāja, NATO

Two ships from NATO’s 1st Standing Naval Mine Countermeasures Group arrived at the Port of Liepāja on October 30, demonstrating allied presence in the Baltic Sea region, LSM reported.

During the visit, representatives of the group are due to meet Liepāja Mayor Gunārs Ansiņš to discuss current cooperation. The visit aims to strengthen ties between NATO allies and the local community.

The ships will remain moored at the naval base throughout the weekend.

The group is one of NATO’s standing naval forces. Its main tasks include searching for and neutralising sea mines, taking part in international military exercises and helping improve the safety of shipping. Its work also supports cooperation between allied navies and their ability to respond together to security challenges in the Baltic Sea and other areas of operation.
