Estonia’s National Electoral Committee has approved electronic voting by smartphone as well as computer in next year’s parliamentary elections, ERR reported. A voter app will be developed for devices running iOS and Android.
Committee chair Ingrid Kullerkann said most members considered the risks of using the app on smartphones to be sufficiently mitigated.
Arne Koitmäe, head of the State Electoral Office, said Estonia’s electronic voting system is among the most thoroughly audited and tested systems. It undergoes load, recovery and security tests every year.
Estonia has used electronic voting since 2005. In the 2023 parliamentary elections, more than 312,000 people voted electronically, accounting for 51.2 percent of all voters.
