Eesti Laul, Laura, Vahur Valgmaa

Laura can unleash her “inner animal” in “Metsapiiga,” her entry in Estonia’s Eesti Laul music competition, songwriter Vahur Valgmaa told ERR. He described the song as primal, feminine and authentic.

Valgmaa said he and Laura had crossed paths long ago but had never officially made music together. “Metsapiiga” was not initially written for her: it was intended for another singer, who was unable to perform it as hoped. Valgmaa said they then brought in “the heavy artillery” at the studio, and Laura recorded the song.

He said he wanted to create a “banger” for Eesti Laul. After the year of Tommy Cash and 5miinust, the previous contest had seemed a little weak to him, so instead of making a fuss on social media, he decided to make something exciting himself.

“Metsapiiga” is one of only a few Estonian-language songs to reach the Eesti Laul final. Valgmaa said its lyrics were written “exactly for Laura and about Laura.” He added that the experienced artist needed no advice and could use the song to let her inner animal out completely.
