Social Democrat Rita Grigalienė, Lithuania’s deputy minister for social security and labour, will run for mayor of Tauragė district in the upcoming local elections, LRT reports.

“Tauragė is home to me. My roots are here, and the concerns of its people matter to me,” Grigalienė said in a statement. She said she wanted everyone in the district to have a good quality of life, with children receiving a good education, people able to see a doctor promptly when ill, and older residents able to live independently for as long as possible. She added that these services should be available not only in the town but also in the district’s most remote settlements.

Grigalienė has served as deputy minister since 2025, overseeing issues including the rights of people with disabilities, equal opportunities, family and child protection, and European Union investment. Since 2015, she has also been a member of the Tauragė District Municipal Council, leader of the Social Democratic faction, opposition leader and chair of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party’s Tauragė branch.

Municipal council and mayoral elections are scheduled for March 7, 2027.
