Kode9 to lecture on sound and modern warfare in Tallinn

Wednesday 28th October 2026 on 15:45 in Estonia

Estonian Academy of Arts, music, Tallinn

Producer and sound theorist Kode9 will discuss the role of sound in modern warfare at a free lecture at the Estonian Academy of Arts on November 13, ERR reports. The programme, organised by the academy’s new media department and Dreamscape, begins at 6 p.m. and requires advance registration.

Kode9, whose real name is Steve Goodman, founded the Hyperdub record label and wrote the book “Sonic Warfare”. His lecture, “Sound Cloud / Data Cloud / Kill Cloud”, will address acoustic weapons, fear associated with drones, AI-based sound surveillance and machine listening. Goodman will also consider how musicians can respond to a world in which listening is increasingly used for surveillance and control.

The programme will also feature London-based musician, DJ and neuroscience researcher Silvia Kastel, who will speak about how people with different neurotypes experience music. Drawing on her doctoral research, her lecture will explore music-induced emotions, curiosity and pleasure, as well as how musical preferences develop.

Polish drummer, composer and anthropologist Piotr Gwadera, who performs as Gary Gwadera, will examine how the characteristic rhythms of the Polish traditional dance oberek can be combined with the syncopated rhythms of Chicago footwork.

After the lectures, Dreamscape will host a club night at Paavli Culture Factory. Kode9, Kastel and Gwadera will perform on the main stage alongside Nikolajev, Susanna Raiend and Wash Electra. A second stage will focus on immersive listening, with ambient and experimental electronic music, live sets by Wondering O, L.Lukyann and Type1, and DJ sets.
