Lithuania’s Transport Ministry has proposed adding several facilities to the list of assets and equipment important to national security, LRT reports. The government is due to consider the proposal on Wednesday.
The proposed additions include data centres operated by the Centre of Registers and the Lithuanian Radio and Television Centre, Vilnius TV Tower, Kaunas Radio Relay Station, outdoor gunpowder storage facilities and a production building operated by the Giraitė Arms Factory, and Lithuanian Post’s Vilnius logistics centre.
The draft amendment aims to ensure continuity of state information resources, public broadcasting and warning systems, the defence industry, and postal and logistics services. Its explanatory note says the data centres store and manage state information systems, registers and other government information resources. Vilnius TV Tower and Kaunas Radio Relay Station transmit radio and television signals, warning messages and other information important to the public. Disruption, unauthorised access, sabotage or loss of control could have significant negative consequences, the note says.
The ministry says the Giraitė factory’s production lines, equipment, control systems, documentation and raw material stocks form an integrated complex that would be difficult to restore. It also describes the factory as directly linked to Lithuania’s defence industry and ammunition production capacity, and as a potential target for sabotage, diversion and other hybrid activities.
Including Lithuanian Post’s logistics centre would help manage security risks and strengthen the distribution of universal postal services, parcels and correspondence during a crisis, emergency or mobilisation, according to the ministry.
