Vilnius district is assessing ways to prevent interruptions to heating and waste collection after the utility company Nemenčinės komunalininkas ran into financial difficulties, LRT reports. The municipality said it has not yet made a decision.

The municipality said its administration was working closely with the company to assess the situation and possible solutions. Its goal is to address the financial difficulties while ensuring essential services continue and protecting residents’ interests.

The risk of disruption arose after the district council did not extend the company’s permission to borrow from a bank. With the existing loan due to be repaid and no other financing source available, the company could lack funds for essential costs, including fuel, electricity and staff wages.

Municipal administration director Vytautas Vansavičius previously said officials would first consider allocating money from the municipal budget, which would also require council approval. The municipality has also asked the Vilnius County Waste Management Centre to defer payments.

LRT reports that the situation also carries a risk that the bank could take about 600,000 euros from funds accumulated by apartment building residents. Nemenčinės komunalininkas supplies heat to about 2,300 consumers.
