The Social Democrats have made the strongest move among those entering politics by bringing Jonatan Vseviov into the party, ERR political journalist Mirko Ojakivi said on the news programme Aktuaalne kaamera.
Vseviov has the potential to become prime minister, Ojakivi said, but his main challenge will be winning over the party’s traditional voters. Some politicians have questioned whether he can connect with the ordinary voter who once supported the Social Democrats, including voters associated with Ivari Padar.
Vseviov’s announcement was staged in a style Ojakivi likened to American politics, with a prominent presentation and forceful statements. He said the visual impression may have unsettled some people, especially since the approach seemed a poor fit for a Social Democrat. Ojakivi added that Estonians may be getting used to parties taking sharper positions to attract attention.
The Social Democrats are trying to close the gap with the Centre Party and Isamaa, which have long shared the top two places in the Institute of Societal Research’s rankings. Some polls commissioned by parties reportedly show the Social Democrats drawing closer. Ojakivi said the party wants to be among the top three when the election campaign begins.
Vseviov could become prime minister, Ojakivi said, though competition for the role is strong. He also noted that Estonia has struggled to find politicians for several important posts, including the presidency and defence minister, and has had to turn to officials instead.
The next parliamentary election is scheduled for 2027.
