A goat at Vahtra, a hobby farm in Tartu County, has given birth to triplets, surprising her owners, ERR reported. Domestic goats usually give birth in spring and typically have no more than two kids at a time.
The kids, two females and one male, are just over a week old. Their mother, Lucy, gave birth without assistance. Owner Maia Näkk said the family had spent weeks preparing and had stayed up at night in anticipation.
“We came to the barn after work, around five or six, and found that the goat had given birth,” Näkk said. “It was a shock that nobody had been there and we wondered whether everything was all right. We were surprised she had managed so well, especially as it was her first birth.”
The male kid is especially curious and likes to jump around and butt people, Näkk said. He appears to have inherited the trait from his father, Uncle Julius, who still has to spend time apart from the other goats. The father is occasionally allowed to sniff the babies.
Family member Heili Poom said she spends time with the kids when she is not at school, helping them get used to people. The triplets will stay with their mother for a few more months, enjoying her milk and their owners’ affection, before moving to new families.
