More young people in Bauska Municipality are seeking help with personal difficulties, LSM reported, citing Zemgale Regional Television. The youth association Laiks jauniešiem helps about 100 young people each year, and in nearly a third of cases immediate intervention is needed. The municipality’s Social Service said 43 young people had sought help this year.
Young people face problems including family and school relationships, addiction, depression and suicidal thoughts. For many, being able to speak without fear of judgment is the first step towards addressing their difficulties.
Fifteen-year-old Alan turned to Laiks jauniešiem after getting into serious trouble with law enforcement. He said he had to attend the association to work off his probation. “They helped me by giving me a choice and explaining things. They didn’t reproach me, but listened to me too. Now I don’t cause trouble at all,” he said.
The association says behavioural problems among young people are often linked to difficulties communicating with others. Its chair, Gints Jankovskis, said listening and talking together can help young people find solutions and support. They need people who will listen without judging and help them see what they might do differently, he said.
