2027 local elections, Kaunas district, Valerijus Makūnas

Social Democrat Valerijus Makūnas will not seek another term as mayor of Kaunas district, LRT reported, citing the Delfi news website.

“I said a year ago that I would not run,” Makūnas told Delfi. He has led the district for five terms, since 2007.

Makūnas said it was time to make way for someone younger, adding that change was necessary. The Kaunas district branch of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party has put forward two candidates for the mayor’s post: MPs Šarūnas Šukevičius and Paulius Visockas. The party is expected to decide on its candidate by the end of October.

The next municipal council and mayoral elections are scheduled for March 7, 2027. Since the 2023 elections, a person who has served three consecutive terms as mayor cannot be elected to a fourth consecutive term.
