A drone that crashed in Pasvalys district on Sunday was carrying explosives, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said, LRT reported. Images taken at the crash site in Juodžioniai village and published by jp.lt showed broken trees and a crater.
Sinkevičius said the drone entered Lithuania from Poland and was of Ukrainian origin. He said debris and information from Ukraine supported the assessment that it was a Ukrainian FPV drone that lost contact during an attack. The prime minister said there was no doubt the drone had been carrying explosives.
The drone was first detected at 5:47 a.m., according to Sinkevičius. Residents in Kalvarija called the Emergency Response Centre at 6:15 a.m. to report hearing a sound resembling a drone, with further reports later coming from Marijampolė.
A red air alert was issued in Panevėžys and Šiauliai counties shortly after 7 a.m. on Sunday after an object entered Lithuanian airspace. The alert was lifted about an hour later.
Debris from the drone also damaged a car travelling on a road. No one in the vehicle was injured.
