Artist and filmmaker Jane Jin Kaisen has opened the video exhibition Island Beyond the Sea at Kai Art Center, ERR reported. The exhibition explores memory, migration and the telling of history through the relationship between people and nature on Jeju Island in Korea.

The show brings together seven interconnected films made between 2022 and 2024: Funeral of This Regime, Offering, Halmang, Guardians, Portal, Core and Wreck. It is the first time the complete series has been exhibited together in Europe, and Kaisen’s first institutional solo exhibition in the Baltic states.

Kaisen, who lives and works in Copenhagen, is an internationally recognised visual artist and filmmaker. Her work places past and present in dialogue and connects personal experience with wider political histories.

She represented Korea at the 58th Venice Biennale. Her solo exhibition Community of Parting at Charlottenborg Kunsthal received the Danish Association of Art Critics’ award for best exhibition in 2020. Her other honours include the Beckett Prize in 2023, a New Carlsberg Foundation artist grant in 2023 and a three-year working grant from the Danish Arts Foundation in 2022.

The exhibition is open until February 21.
