Police arrested a 73-year-old man suspected of a shooting at a farm in Märjamaa municipality that left one person dead and another seriously injured, ERR reported. The man was detained in Jüri about an hour after police received the alert shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday.

The victims were a 72-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman. The man died at the scene despite receiving first aid, while the woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the suspect left the scene by car and headed towards Tallinn. Officers found a weapon with him when they arrested him shortly after 7 p.m.

The suspect and the victims knew each other, police said. He does not have a firearms permit or a legally owned firearm, and investigators are working to establish where the weapon came from.

Police are collecting evidence at the scene. A criminal investigation has been opened under the section of law concerning the killing of another person and is being led by the Western District Prosecutor’s Office. Prosecutor Keili Tiirik said the office would ask a court to remand the suspect for an initial two months.
