Transport Minister Juras Taminskas is considering running for Vilnius mayor in next year’s election and says he will decide “in the near future,” LRT reported.

“I don’t know yet whether I will run, but I am thinking about it,” Taminskas told reporters. The Social Democrat said his decision would come soon, though not necessarily next week.

Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas has also said he is “intensively thinking” about seeking a second term. He has likewise said he expects to decide in the near future.

Several parties have already announced their candidates. The Liberal Movement is backing Simonas Gentvilas, the Freedom Party is putting forward Vilnius Deputy Mayor and party leader Vytautas Mitalas, and the National Alliance has nominated its leader, Vytautas Sinica.

MP Artūras Zuokas has announced he will run as an independent. Vilnius council member Aleksandras Nemunaitis has also said he will seek the post. The Union of the People and Justice is backing journalist and former television presenter Kristupas Krivickas.

The non-parliamentary Lithuanian Regions Party plans to nominate Violeta Fominienė-Salemone, founder of the Vardan Salininkų community and a local representative for the Children’s Sub-Ward in Naujininkai.

Municipal council and mayoral elections are scheduled for March 7, 2027.
