Lithuania has banned fishing for salmon and sea trout in river stretches important for spawning from Friday through December 31, LRT reported, citing the Ministry of Environment.
The ban applies to three sections of the Neris River: from the bridge on Road 263 upstream of Jonava to Žirmūnai Bridge in Vilnius; from Valakupiai Bridge to the Vilnius–Ignalina railway bridge; and from the Buivydžiai pedestrian bridge to the mouth of the Baluoša River.
Fishing is allowed in other stretches of the Neris with a recreational fishing permit, but all salmon and sea trout caught must be released. The list of river stretches where fishing is prohibited is set out in the rules for recreational fishing in inland waters.
The ministry also noted that fishing for brown trout is prohibited in certain river stretches from October 1 to December 31. Fishing for narrow-clawed crayfish is prohibited from October 15 to July 15.
