Jelgava’s Senior University has welcomed 98 students for the new academic year, with courses in languages, computer skills and artificial intelligence, LSM reported, citing Zemgale Regional Television.

Interest is strongest in foreign languages and computer skills. Alongside English and German, students can study Italian and French. The course offering is shaped by the students’ own requests.

“Now there is artificial intelligence, and it is something completely new. That is exactly why these classes are so good,” student Dagnija Avota said.

Instructor Judīte Poriķe said students want to keep up with the times and learn about new technologies. They bring their own devices, including laptops and iPhones, and learn how to use them.

The programme also includes creative workshops. This year, each participant is making a linen shirt, with individual details such as ribbon, cross-stitch or drawn-thread work. Workshop leader Ārija Kalniņa said participants would also have the chance to learn to knit socks using two needles.

The Senior University has operated since 2019 and now offers six programmes. Students do not take exams or other tests, but receive a record book at the end of the year listing their subjects and class hours. Their new skills sometimes surprise their grandchildren.
