Long-distance sailing captain Arvydas Aleksas Narmontas has died, LRT reported, citing the Vakarų ekspresas news outlet. Narmontas was also a longtime employee of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority. He would have turned 80 next year.

Former Klaipėda mayor and member of parliament Vytautas Grubliauskas said Narmontas spent 25 years at sea.

“He later gave his experience, wisdom and sense of responsibility to the Port of Klaipėda,” Grubliauskas wrote. “May you have a calm and bright eternal voyage, Captain. May calm waters and eternal light await you beyond the horizon.” He also expressed condolences to Narmontas’ family, loved ones, colleagues and Klaipėda’s maritime community.
