Latvia’s parliament, the Saeima, approved citizenship for India-born scientist Divya Kanana Vishwanatha on Thursday, LSM reported. She works with the Latvian Academy of Sciences to promote the use of artificial intelligence in pharmacy.

Vishwanatha holds a doctorate in computer science and works in information and communications technology, data science, artificial intelligence and pharmaceutical research.

Since 2019, she and her family have lived and worked in Latvia, in connection with the Latvian Academy of Sciences. Since 2024, she has been head of the artificial intelligence laboratory at Dr. Vishys, where she is developing a pharmaceutical research and development centre and an AI laboratory.

She collaborates with Latvian scientists and takes part in initiatives to develop science and innovation. With the academy, she supports a plan to establish a Centre of Excellence and Open Innovation to attract leading scientists to Latvia, develop research-based innovation and commercialise research results.

The academy’s leadership also backed granting her citizenship, citing her contributions to science, pharmacy, business and innovation, the creation of new jobs and the strengthening of Latvia’s international competitiveness.
