The “Migla” proposal by architecture firm NOONSOON and landscape architecture firm Nemoralis has won a design competition for the redevelopment of Riga’s Station Square pavilion, LSM reported. The winning teams will be invited to negotiate a contract to prepare the construction design and provide author supervision.
The competition sought an integrated architectural, functional and landscape design for the pavilion and its surroundings, supporting a high-quality, actively used urban environment in Riga’s Central Business District.
The project covers about 1,850 square metres, while the wider area considered in the study spans nearly 10,000 square metres. The brief called for a commercially viable use for the pavilion alongside people-friendly public space, well-planned pedestrian routes, sustainable landscaping and a distinctive architectural identity suited to the location.
The “Riga’s Layers” proposal by architecture firm Arplan took second place. The “Riga Rise” concept by Prague-based firm Architecture Acts came third.
Nine proposals were submitted and assessed by an inter-institutional jury led by architect Janis Dripe. All entries will be on display on the second floor of the Origo shopping centre until the end of the year.
Dace Kalvane, a board member of the Latvian Association of Architects, said the designs offered different approaches to renovating the pavilion and improving public space. She said better pedestrian routes, landscaping and modern solutions could make the area more accessible, comfortable and attractive.
