Daugavietis quits Unity board after election result
Latvian MP Dāvis Mārtiņš Daugavietis has resigned from the board of the Unity party, saying he takes responsibility for mistakes made by the New Unity alliance, LSM reports.
“I believe we made many fundamental mistakes as New Unity during this four-year term and in the Saeima election, and I see my own responsibility in failing to prevent them,” Daugavietis wrote on social media platform X.
He said he had urged colleagues on Sunday to resign collectively, but they had not heeded his call. He also called on others to take responsibility for the negative election result and said he hoped to join future discussions about the direction of Unity and New Unity.
Daugavietis, who chairs the Saeima’s Sports Subcommittee, praised Health Minister Hosam Abu Meri for taking responsibility without waiting for others. Abu Meri announced last week that he would step down as chair of Unity’s council. He was the most crossed-out candidate on the New Unity list, receiving 3,369 negative votes.
The United List won the 15th Saeima election with 41 seats. Latvia First secured 17 seats, Sovereign Power and the Union of Young Latvians won 15, and the National Alliance and the Progressives each received 10. New Unity won seven seats.
