Former European Commission energy commissioner Kadri Simson is joining the Social Democratic Party and will run in Tartu in Estonia’s March 2027 parliamentary elections, ERR reported.

Simson said she chose the party because it offers Estonia a positive direction rather than simply opposing others. She also said Estonia should have a stronger voice in the European Union and actively defend its interests and support for Ukraine.

Simson was a member of the Centre Party from 1995 to 2024. She served in four parliamentary terms and was minister of economic affairs and infrastructure. From 2019 to 2024, she was the European Commission’s energy commissioner, responsible for European energy policy and energy security.
