Maarja Nuut performed her large-scale work “Combing hair from sand” three times last week, in collaboration with vocal ensemble Shards and Swiss drummer Nicolas Stocker, ERR reported.

The work draws on poems by Eha Lättemäe, alongside texts by Ilmar Laaban, Tõnis Vilu, Hasso Krull, Mehis Heinsaar and Nuut herself.

“The work has been a long journey to mature, first inward and then reflected back through what surrounds me,” Nuut said. She began writing it in 2022, when global upheaval left her feeling as if she were in a vacuum. She described her experience as fragmented and said she had searched for meaning while feeling, for a long time, as though her tongue had been cut out.

After finding Lättemäe’s poems, Nuut said, a door opened to a distinctive world that continues to take shape.

The performances took place at Vanemuine Concert Hall, Pärnu Concert Hall and the Kumu auditorium. Nuut will perform the same material in the United Kingdom in the coming weeks.
