Two men were found dead after a house fire in Kėdainiai district, while two other residents escaped, LRT reported on Monday, citing police and fire-rescue officials.

The bodies of men born in 1947 and 1969 were found in the burned-out house in Ivaniškiai village. The fire was reported at 10:16 p.m. on Sunday and extinguished at 12:20 a.m. on Monday.

A woman and a man, both born in 1971, had left the burning building before firefighters arrived. Three of the four residents had the same surname and may have been members of one family, according to a fire-rescue official. It is not known whether the fourth person was related to them.

Firefighters said reaching the house in the wooded location was difficult, and fire engines became stuck. Four water tankers were used to fight the blaze. Initial information indicated that the house had no smoke detector.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Police have opened a pre-trial investigation to establish the cause of death.
