Firefighters in Lithuania were called out 101 times over a windy, rainy weekend to remove fallen trees, LRT reported. They responded 84 times on Friday and 17 times on Saturday.
Most trees fell onto roads, though some landed on cars. On Friday, 54 of the call-outs were in the coastal region, Fire and Rescue Department representative Edita Zdanevičienė told the ELTA news agency.
In Klaipėda, a city in western Lithuania, a tree fell onto three cars on Liepų Street shortly after 9 a.m. A Škoda Rapid had damage to its boot and a dented roof, while a Volkswagen Passat had a damaged roof and broken window. A Mazda had minor scratches. Firefighters removed the tree.
At 10:11 a.m. on Mokyklos Street, a branch fell onto a Volkswagen Arteon, breaking its windscreen and mirror and denting the roof. Firefighters used a chainsaw to remove it. On Bangų Street, a broken tree leaned against a parked BMW X1. Responders cut it up and moved it to the roadside; the car’s roof was dented and its right rear door scratched.
Later, on Dragūnų Street, firefighters found a tree leaning against a residential building, with its trunk extending through a window into an apartment. They could not remove it because cutting the trunk risked bringing the tree down onto other apartments. The tree was cordoned off, and the city’s maintenance department was notified.
At 3:42 p.m. on Taikos Avenue, a kiosk trailer blown by strong winds fell onto an Opel. Rescuers lifted it off the car, which had a dented driver’s door and a broken window.
