Evelin Võigemast says she tends to dominate song choices in her band, although its members share a love of music. She discussed the group with musician Jonas Kaarnamets on ERR’s “Hommik Anuga” programme.
“We are all quite big music lovers, each with our own tastes. In this trio, our common ground comes together. I tend to dominate with my musical preferences,” Võigemast said. She added that the other members are professional musicians who can play almost anything, while she cannot sing absolutely everything.
Kaarnamets said Võigemast’s dynamism appealed to him, and that a good band needs a capable frontperson. Võigemast, in turn, said she liked all of Kaarnamets’s musical projects.
Musician Peedu Kass recalled how the group’s first concert at Jazzkaar came about. The musicians played a small home concert in Lüganuse, Võigemast’s father’s home village in Ida-Viru County, where Jazzkaar organiser Anne Erm was in the audience. After the performance, Erm praised the music and suggested they have one more rehearsal, Kass said.
Kass said he invited Võigemast and Kaarnamets to join the band because they were “beautiful people”. He had known Kaarnamets for longer and said he recognised a shared taste and rapport with Võigemast after they met while working on theatre productions.
Kaarnamets said he is currently making a heartbreak-themed album with his band Frankie Animal. Võigemast said she had listened to it and liked it, joking that the songs sounded so heartbroken that she wondered what breakups they were about. She described some of the music the band makes as “old men’s music” and said they try to seek out things that are interesting and somewhat forgotten.
