Strong winds to hit Lithuania before rainy weekend

Strong winds are expected across Lithuania on Friday, followed by rain in much of the country over the weekend, LRT reports.

A low-pressure system will bring strengthening southwesterly winds overnight into Friday, with gusts of up to 15 to 20 metres per second in western Lithuania. On Friday, southwesterly and westerly gusts will reach 15 to 20 metres per second in many places, and up to 21 to 23 metres per second locally. Along the coast, gusts could reach 24 to 27 metres per second, and up to 28 metres per second in some places between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Residents are advised to close windows and doors, secure loose objects outdoors and fasten temporary structures. Drivers should take care and avoid parking near tall trees. People are also advised to stay away from trees, advertising boards and power lines.

Winds will ease overnight into Saturday. Rain is expected in many places during the day, with winds of 9 to 14 metres per second. Temperatures will range from 5 to 10 degrees Celsius overnight and 12 to 16 degrees during the day.

Rain is forecast in most districts on Sunday, with southwesterly and southerly winds of 7 to 12 metres per second. Temperatures will be 7 to 12 degrees overnight and 12 to 17 degrees during the day.
