Border guards fire gas round during Vilnius smuggling operation

Several people and a large quantity of cigarettes were seized during a smuggling operation in Vilnius early Thursday, LRT reported, citing the State Border Guard Service.

Service representative Giedrius Mišutis said the operation took place at about 5 a.m. A border guard vehicle was damaged while officers tried to stop the smugglers, and an officer fired one gas round at a car, he said.

Medical staff examined one border guard at the scene and found no injuries. The officer continued working. A pre-trial investigation has been opened into the illegal transport of excise goods.
