Rakvere Theatre actress Carolyn Veensalu says she has not yet come to terms with having to be an adult, ERR reported. She spoke on Raadio 2’s “R2 Päev” programme about joining the theatre this season and her roles in a new stage production and a feature film.

“It’s frightening that I have to be an adult,” Veensalu said. “It’s a big thing that I may not have managed to come to terms with yet.” She added that the theatre company had been very supportive. Much of the cast appears in the new production “Karin ja Indrek”, which helped her get to know her colleagues quickly.

Veensalu plays Tiina in the production. She said that at school she had been required to read the first two parts of A. H. Tammsaare’s novel “Truth and Justice”, but was unfamiliar with the fourth part. Getting back into the story through the production had been refreshing, she said.

In the feature film “Musta pori näkku”, Veensalu plays Liisa, one of the boys’ objects of interest. But the character also strongly wants to become a journalist and creates tension among the boys. Liisa does not appear in Mihkel Raud’s book; screenwriter Martin Algus created the character for the film.

Veensalu said the cast looked at archival material to immerse themselves in the period in which the film is set. She also met punks during filming, describing it as a very different experience because she is not a punk herself.

She said the idea that actors drink alcohol before going on stage is now a thing of the past. She has heard talk of other prohibited substances, but said she does not know those people or that world herself.

Before attending acting school, Veensalu danced for 12 years, combining contemporary and street dance. She said she competed often and is highly competitive. She is also a backing dancer for the band Redel.
