Latvian public media’s charity marathon Dod pieci! will focus this year on mental health and suicide prevention, LSM reported. The campaign aims to reduce stigma and silence around mental health difficulties, help people recognise risks and seek support, and highlight gaps in the system.
The marathon will raise money for evidence-based support for people who have attempted suicide and those at high risk of self-harm or suicide. Organisers will also highlight that help is available in a crisis and that talking can be a first step towards recovery.
From December 11 to 17, the marathon will broadcast from a glass studio in Dome Square in Riga. Latvijas Radio 5 DJs will speak with experts and people who have experienced a serious mental health crisis, either themselves or through someone close to them. The week will also feature performances and songs chosen by donors.
Journalist Henrieta Verhoustinska will be the campaign’s ambassador. She said the subject was personal: she has lived with depression for six years, and someone close to her survived a suicide attempt. She said those around that person had not recognised the warning signs and wants people to learn to notice, ask and offer support.
Latvijas Radio 5 DJ and Dod pieci! founder in Latvia Toms Grēviņš said he hoped the marathon would prompt important conversations about the joy and meaning of life and humanity.
