Lithuania’s renewed Government Migration Commission will review the country’s migration policy and assess whether current measures are effective, the Interior Ministry said Wednesday, according to LRT.
Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius ordered the commission’s work and membership to be updated. Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas will coordinate its work. The commission will analyse migration trends and propose ways to manage migration flows more effectively.
Katelynas said migration policy should reflect national security interests, foreign policy priorities and labour market needs. Decisions should also take account of security risks and the capacity of state institutions, he said.
From November, foreign nationals will no longer be able to apply for Lithuanian temporary residence permits through external service provider offices in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The ministry said the decision was made in response to threats to national security interests.
The number of countries where applications can be submitted has fallen from 31 to 27. Work-based applications are accepted in 22 of those countries. The ministry also said this year’s quota of 24,700 for foreign nationals newly arriving in Lithuania for work has been used up.
