Latvia to establish ESA space education office
The University of Latvia, Ventspils University of Applied Sciences and Cēsis Space Exploration Centre, a space education centre, have signed an agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) to establish and run a European Space Education Resource Office in Latvia, LSM reports.
The ESERO network operates in several European countries, working with schools, science centres, teachers and other partners in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. It uses space as a practical and engaging way to encourage interest in these subjects.
ESERO Latvia will be the 23rd office of its kind in Europe. It will provide Latvian teachers and pupils with space-themed STEM resources in Latvian, adapted to the needs of the country’s education system.
The office will organise professional development for teachers, provide access to educational resources and involve children and young people aged three to 18 in practical ESA education projects. Its long-term goal is to encourage young people to pursue STEM studies and careers in science, technology, engineering and space-related fields.
University of Latvia Vice-Rector for Development Enno Ence said the programme would give young people the opportunity to apply their knowledge, learn about research and develop skills needed in a knowledge-based economy.
