Students at Riga State German Grammar School have made a tradition of celebrating Teachers’ Day by bringing their teachers home-baked treats, LSM reported.
The teachers’ room filled with the smell of cinnamon and chocolate as students, including many seventh-graders, took part. One teacher called it a “sweet day” and said the treats made staff feel loved.
Culture and arts teacher Līga Strazdiņa, who has worked at the school for 31 years, said she enjoys the variety of each day and is motivated by the chance to inspire and engage young people. She also values working in the school’s historic building, designed by Indriķis Blankenburgs and surrounded by what the report describes as Northern Europe’s tallest hedge.
Students said patience was the quality they most appreciated in their teachers. Eleventh-grader Kārlis Bedrītis said a good teacher is patient and enjoys teaching. Student Viktorija Barkova wished teachers endurance and patience, adding that their work is difficult.
Strazdiņa also welcomed a greeting from the president, saying teachers can see the results of their work and should remind themselves of its value. The students’ sweets were expected to last into the following day, and a card with them read: “Thank you for your work!”
