Kemeri plans to use natural methods to treat polluted rainwater before it reaches the environment, as part of an international project involving Latvia, Estonia and Finland, LSM reported, citing Zemgale Regional Television. Jūrmala Water is the project’s lead partner.
The pilot is planned near a sewer pumping station on Durbes Street, where a small underground tank of up to 50 square metres will be built. A planted rain garden will temporarily hold and slow the water, allowing particles to settle. Soil, plants and microorganisms will help improve its quality.
The system will combine mechanical processes, including filtration and settling, with biological treatment involving bacteria, said Linda Grinberga, a professor at the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies. Sensors will continuously monitor the system and help identify problems before the sewer network overflows. Heavy rainfall caused flooding in Kemeri two years ago, prompting the search for ways to address the risk of contaminated water entering the environment.
Residents have welcomed the plans. One resident, Ivan, said the project would be valuable because dogs at a nearby training ground had drunk from puddles after heavy rain. Other pilot projects are planned in Jūrmala, Estonia and Finland.
